Part 1 of 2 - Price Increases

I am constantly being asked why are my supplies are putting their prices up in a recession as retailers are nervous in this price competitive environment of raising prices and  feel they just cannot charge more… well here are a few answers that I hope will help you understand why.
Rising costs and price increases are a worry for everyone, not just retailers. Manufacturers, distributors, and sales people are all just as concerned. All costs are increasing and have been for a few years now. Sadly there are many contributors; perhaps the single biggest factor is the increase in raw materials, particularly cotton which was caused by poor harvests and also synthetic textiles which have been directly affected by rising petroleum prices, which also affect everyone throughout the supply chain as they transport goods around the world. Another detrimental influence has been the wage increases in China and other Asian countries due to improved living standards and competition from wealthier sectors in China, combined with an artificially strong currency. Finally to add yet another nail to the coffin was the big strengthening of the Euro 9 months ago, which ensured that European brands had to adjust their prices.

Part 2 of 2 - Tired Shop Interiors

Get the carpet cleaned or re-varnish the wood floors and don’t forget to wash or replace those fitting room curtains. Tidy and repaint the cash desk or if it’s passed repair then get a local carpenter to build new one; you can then have some input into the design and build in hanger storage, wrapping section and bespoke storage for all those catalogues and price lists that keep getting in the way. This will be far cheaper than a professional shop fitters and the cash point is very important as it gives the right final impression. Lastly look at the detail and deal with all those little things that have been chipped or damaged and repair them. Even your dull stainless steel fixtures can be brought back to life with some WD40 and  a cloth; removing all the little rusty spots and making them look NEW again. Re-spray mannequins and bust forms if they are looking old and damaged.

Top Tip: It’s amazing what can be achieved using friends and family (Might get the job done for FREE aswell)

Part 1 of 2 - Tired Shop Interiors

If your shop interiors are looking tires and you do not or cannot spend too much money on them what should you do; For years I worked in independent stores; we were always working on a tight budget so here are a few of my tips. Generally speaking shop interiors look tired because they are either out of date or just very grubby and tatty through just wear and tear. So firstly give everything a very thorough good clean. A pot of paint only cost £30 no excuses for chipped walls and tatty skirting boards. Rub those skirting boards down, fill those holes and paint… you’ll be amazed what a fresh coat of paint will achieve. Look at adding wallpaper to one wall, create a feature behind the cash desk, even the most expensive wallpapers can be brought at under £100 a roll and same for as little as £10 in the oddment bin at your local DIY centre; so hunt around.
